The Nitsiq

The Ulu

The Inuit didn't have power tools or hammers....

Inuit Tools

The Ulu served many purposes and is extremely sharp. It was used for things from cleaning and cutting fish and animals to cutting children's hair and serving food from it. The Ulu was traditionally used by the women in the family, and was one of the most useful non-hunting tools. The ulu is still used today-just not for cutting children's hair.

The Nitsiq was a long rod with a hook at the bottom. It was kept on kayaks, and used to pull animals from the water. The Nitsiq served only one purpose, but it was a very important purpose.

The bow drill is one of the most commonly known tools of the inuit. The man would hold it in his mouth for stabilization and rotate it back and forth. The bow drill was mainly used for starting fires and, well, drilling!

The Kakivak was used for fishing in shallow water. It was a spear-like object with three spikes on the end. It had a string attached, and when the Inuit caught the fish, they would put it on the string, which made it so they could carry very large loads of fish.
